Science with my Peeps

We love the Hippity Hoppity Math lesson so much, we decided to add a little science to the Easter season as well! This is a great experiment for children young and old. We used Easter's favorite candy, Peeps, for this classroom or household experiment.



Students set up three cups on their desks. One cup held Sprite. The second cup had salt water, and a third cup was filled with baking soda, vinegar, and water. The point of this experiment was two fold. I wanted my students to review the concepts behind physical and chemical changes, and also to walk through the scientific process. I hate to say it, but I think that they were expecting an explosion or something very dramatic to happen. No exploding Peeps here. However, they were able to observe physical and chemical changes. They used a science experiment reflection sheet to record their observations. It was music to my ears that they were able to converse about what they observed and draw conclusions. It doesn't hurt either that they really enjoyed the experiment!



I remind them all the time that they're real scientists, and your children are too! Point out science concepts around them (you might even find material in their Easter baskets). Engage them in conversations using science terms (nothing fancy, just maybe new to them). There is nothing more helpful to a teacher, than a parent who has been their child's teacher from day one!
